Purpose: Complete ImageSilo’s 2010 server infrastructure upgrade.

Customer Impact: ImageSilo engineers will be completing the server infrastructure upgrade (which has replaced nearly every server in ImageSilo’s network). This final step will require physically moving the network switching components and some servers. The redundant nature of the network architecture coupled with extensive use of NIC teaming should minimize and customer impact. However, there will be necessary cluster failovers on load balancers, firewalls, and database clusters. Most of these failovers (specifically for load balancers and firewalls) typically cause minimal cause very short (less than 5 seconds) periods of increased latency. Database cluster failovers are expected to cause brief periods (expected to be less than 2 minutes) of service impact.

Purpose: Complete decommissioning process for old Active Directory domain controllers.

Customer Impact: ImageSilo engineers will be restarting the old domain controllers (the ones that were shut down during the previous maintenance) in order to demote them from the domains entirely and then shut them down for good. This marks the final stage of the process for transitioning from the old domain controllers to the new ones. There is a slight chance that some servers could select one of these old domain controllers for authentication affinity during the brief period that each is active while it is being demoted. If that happens, each demotion could cause a brief period (less than 30 seconds) of system non-responsiveness/slowdown while the affected system waits for the timeout before selecting another domain controller.

Purpose: Infrastructure changes to further complete server transitioning.

Customer Impact: ImageSilo engineers will be shutting down and beginning the decommissioning process for the old Active Directory domain controllers as the new replacement units have been installed and burned in successfully. This is expected to result in a few brief periods (approximately 30 seconds) of system non-responsiveness/slowdown as the database clusters and web servers determine their new DC affinity for authentication requests. Database cluster failovers will be manually performed to ensure authentication is operating properly. The cluster failovers are expected to result in a couple of brief periods (up to 30 seconds) of system non-responsiveness/slowdown. Finally, firewall changes will be made that require reboots of the firewalls. As these are clustered and configured in a manner in which failovers happen nearly instantaneously, no customer impact is expected for that operation.

Purpose: Prepare infrastructure as a part of our continuing upgrades to the ImageSilo systems.

Customer Impact: ImageSilo engineers will be physically reorganizing servers in order to remove decommissioned systems and make room for newly commissioned systems. This will require that some of the domain controllers be temporarily shut down during their move (while other domain controllers remain online). Systems that are authenticating to the ones being moved may experience a delay while they wait for the timeout to occur before authenticating to a different domain controller. That delay may result in three or four periods of up to 60 seconds where ImageSilo responds slowly. Additionally, ImageSilo engineers will be expanding the Active Directory Schema used by ImageSilo. This process is not expected to have any customer impact.
