ImageSilo Informational Message – Sep 2, 2010

Date: September 2, 2010 (reposted with correction regarding 2008 R2 being a requirement – specifically R2)

2010 has been a busy year for the ImageSilo engineering team. Network upgrades, complete replacement of the server infrastructure, storage expansions… Needless to say, we never cease our continual improvements and expansions of the systems and infrastructure that give you access to “Any Document – Anywhere – Anytime®.”

To those ends, beginning in October, we will be upgrading the storage systems (SANs) that provide the backend storage for our SQL database clusters. To minimize any customer impact (maintenance windows), this will require building entirely new SQL database clusters which are attached to the new storage systems. We will take this opportunity to build the new clusters using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, whereas previously we were running Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Our engineering team takes an extremely conservative approach to our infrastructure and believes that, with SQL Server 2008 having been commercially available for over two years, it is now proven stable enough for the rigorous requirements of ImageSilo.

Around mid-October, we will begin transitioning all the databases from the old clusters to the new clusters. There is no need to contact ImageSilo Administration regarding the specific dates; when it comes time to transition specific databases, we will notify the affected customers. Once the databases have been moved, the new Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 servers will be providing the backup services that produce the database backup files that are used for Data Delivery. Since the system generating the new database backups is Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, Data Delivery customers will need to be running at least SQL Server 2008 R2 or later in order to restore the backups provided as part of the Data Delivery service. Neither Microsoft SQL Server 2005 nor Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (non-R2) will be able to restore these backups. We are providing this notification at this time in order to provide Data Delivery customers ample opportunity to upgrade to the necessary version of Microsoft SQL Server. We encourage them to upgrade immediately. Rest assured that Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 is compatible with the Data Delivery database backups currently being provided.

The upgrade options for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 to Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 are numerous. One of the most enticing options is use of the free Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition. This latest free version, which is included on our newest product DVD’s and can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/express/Database/, has an increased database storage limit of 10 GB (previously limited to 4 GB). If your needs exceed the limitations of the free Express Edition, additional information about other editions and upgrade options can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/default.aspx.

We are excited about these upcoming database system upgrades which will provide improved customer experience, better fault tolerance, enhanced security, increased management capabilities, and superior backup processing. If you, or anybody on your team, have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact the ImageSilo Administration team.

We appreciate your business and work hard every day to earn it.

ImageSilo Emergency Maintenance Notification – Jul. 13, 2010

Start Date: July 13, 2010 (Tuesday)
Start Time: 7:45 PM (MDT)
Finish Date: July 14, 2010 (Wednesday)
Finish Time: 5:00 AM (MDT)

Purpose: ImageSilo engineers will be replacing failed hardware in the ImageSilo storage systems.

Customer Impact: This morning, ImageSilo storage systems experienced a motherboard failure. Due to the high level of redundancy, the redundant partner of the failed node immediately took control of the affected storage volumes, which was completed within 45 seconds. A replacement motherboard has been dispatched, as well as a vendor-badged engineer to aid in the repair. There is no expected customer impact for the repair of the failed equipment. However, when the failed node is fully restored and control is returned, it is expected that another single 45 second period of latency may occur.

ImageSilo Maintenance Notification – Jun. 1, 2010

Start Date: June 1, 2010
Start Time: 20:00 MDT
Finish Date: June 2, 2010
Finish Time: 04:00 MDT

Purpose: Manually failover load balancers to ensure proper operation.

Customer Impact: ImageSilo engineers will manually failover the load balancers through which all ImageSilo traffic traverses. This is being performed due to a non-customer impacting anomaly that was identified earlier this week. Engineers simply want to ensure that, if required, both load balancers are still working correctly. As load balancer failover happens nearly instantaneously, no customer impact is expected.

Questions/Comments: Please feel free to contact ImageSilo Administration with any questions or comments.

ImageSilo Maintenance Notification – May 21, 2010

Start Date: Friday, May 21, 2010
Start Time: 20:00 MDT
Finish Date: Monday, May 24, 2010
Finish Time: 04:00 MDT

Purpose: Perform previously scheduled (Apr. 9, 2010) network switching firmware upgrades and expansions as well as move and reorganize servers within racks. These changes were not performed during the previous maintenance due to a switch vendor bug identified by ImageSilo engineers prior to that process. In order to address the bug in a manner that would be minimally disruptive, engineers have devised a new course of action.

Customer Impact: ImageSilo engineers will be performing network switch firmware updates and expanding the network infrastructure. The new firmware upgrade process will require swapping of switches (due to a vendor bug). Due to the redundant nature of the switching architecture, it is expected that this will cause a few brief periods of minor packet loss and latency. Finally, ImageSilo engineers will be completing the server reorganization within racks to accomodate additional new servers in order to provide further redundancy and performance. During the move, the database infrastructure will be manually transitioned to redundant partners. This transition is expected to interupt ImageSilo for approximately two minutes.

ImageSilo Maintenance Notification – Apr. 9, 2010

Start Date: Friday, April 9, 2010
Start Time: 20:00 MDT
Finish Date: Monday, April 12, 2010
Finish Time: 04:00 MDT

Purpose: Make system modifications to the ImageSilo storage systems, update firmware on network switching infrastructure, and move/reorganize servers withing racks.

Customer Impact: ImageSilo engineers will be making modifications to the ImageSilo storage systems relating to the software upgrade that was performed on March 26, 2010. These changes are not expected to cause any customer impact. Also, ImageSilo engineers will be performing a firmware update and expanding the network switching infrastructure. The firmware update will require a reboot of the entire switching infrastructure (including all redundant elements, simultaneously). As such, it is expected that ImageSilo will be inaccessible for three to five minutes. Finally, ImageSilo engineers will be moving/reorganizing servers within racks to accomodate new servers. In the coming months, nearly all of the servers within ImageSilo will be replaced with new servers to provide further redundancy and performance. During the move, the database infrastructure will be manually transitioned to redundant partners. This transition is expected to interupt ImageSilo for approximately two minutes.
